What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations. Rooted in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built our castles and cathedrals, it brings men together to build friendships, support their communities and develop themselves through the guiding principles of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service. Its ceremonies use stories, symbolism and shared experience to encourage members to look after those less fortunate, improve themselves and live their lives well.

A Freemason’s journey through what is traditionally called Pure Ancient Masonry has four stages, each marked by its own ceremony. The first three take place in the Lodge and introduce the member to Freemasonry’s values and principles step by step. The fourth takes place in the Holy Royal Arch and completes the journey, bringing together everything that has gone before. Together, they form one continuous experience, often described as One Journey, One Organisation.

Why become a Freemason?

People become Freemasons for many different reasons. Some are looking for friendship and a stronger sense of belonging, while others value the traditions, the chance to develop confidence and new skills, or the opportunity to support their community and charitable causes. Whatever brings someone to Freemasonry, it offers the chance to meet people from different backgrounds, share common values and become part of something that is both rewarding and enjoyable.
